Why I started Cosplay
I have always been a nerd in some form. My first Anime was Speed Racer, because my dad loves it. I have ALWAYS been a Pokemon trainer. Ever since it came to America. I remember having the binder set that had gel pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, etc. and I was that cool kid for a very short time. I have always loved Halloween and dressing up, so the logical next step is to dress up on days that aren't Halloween.
I grew up with Naruto. I watched it as it aired on Toonami, and I fell in love with Sasuke. His brooding, emo nature drew me in because I too, was an emo kid. I had a lock-in in high school with my Anime/War Games clubs and they said that dressing up was optional. So I took the first step into the cosplay world. I asked my grandmother to help me sew, since I didn't have my own machine, supplies, or know-how to create his outfit. My grandma is an incredibly patient person and I appreciate her putting up with my nerdy self to make me happy. She made the shirt, gave me a pair of shorts that were perfect for the outfit, made the arm warmers, and one of my friends lent me the headband. At that point in time, I did have Sasuke's hair cut and color, so I didn't have to find a way to spend money on getting a wig without my parents' knowledge. I cut up quite a few shirts and socks to get the finished result. And yes, it was terrible, but almost everyone's first cosplay is that way.
After that night, I knew it was something I wanted to do more. I was met with plenty of compliments and I wanted to do something fun with my friends. It was also a form of escape from my terrible home life. After that lock-in, I immediately started planning my next cosplay, which was supposed to be Toph Bei Fong from Avatar the Last Airbender. It was not completed, as my parents didn't want me to go to the convention she was planned for, but maybe one day, I will revisit her. I am so thankful to have been able to get started in cosplay and have the ability to create so many amazing costumes and make so many friends.
